The Mustang 5R55S automatic transmission is a 5 speed used in rear wheel drive Ford vehicles. It was mainly used in the wildly popular 2005 – 2010 Ford Mustangs, behind the V8 engine option. The Mustang is one of the original pony cars and has a very large following. The Mustang with the 5R55S transmission is probably one of the most modified vehicles on the road today. There are literally 100’s of performance upgrades available for the engines found in these cars. You would probably need a spreadsheet to keep track of all the changes most owners make, by since time is money, let’s focus on the things that matter.
While a majority of the owners modify their motors, not many give any consideration to the transmission behind them. A modified motor will put out more power, therefore the transmission should be beefed up accordingly. Here are a few things you can do to your Mustang 5R55S automatic transmission to make it stronger:
Shift Improver Kit: These kits include parts that help increase the line pressure of the transmission. The increased line pressure will help provide more holding power to both the clutches and bands, helping them better prevent slipping.
Deep Aluminum Pan: A deep pan will usually hold about two – three extra quarts of transmission fluid. This will help under extreme handling conditions and prevent the pan from being sucked dry. Aluminum is also a much better conductor of heat and will help shed unwanted heat away from the transmission and into the surrounding air. Aluminum pans are also more rigid than their steel counter parts and will help strengthen the overall transmission case.
Transmission Cooler: Heat is by far the biggest enemy of the 5R55S transmission. Drag racing and road racing drive the transmission temperature into dangerous levels. Ideally you don’t want the transmission temperature to go much over 200 degrees. For every 20 degrees it goes over 200 degrees it cuts the life span of the transmission by a factor of two. In simpler terms, at 220 degrees the transmission will only last ½ as long as it was originally designed to. At 260 it falls all the way down to 1/8ththe original life span. The best way to combat the heat is to install an aftermarket transmission cooler. You want to invest in the biggest cooler that will fit your vehicle. If you can afford it, invest in a transmission cooler that includes a built in fan. The built in fan will help circulate air over the cooler even if the vehicle is not in motion.
Eventually all transmissions will need to be replaced. After all, they are not designed to last forever. I high recommend you consider replacing your worn out transmission with one that has been re-manufactured over one that is simply rebuilt. A re-manufactured transmission will include upgrades and modifications designed to make them last long. Rebuilt transmission will not. A re-manufactured transmission will also include a much better warranty; 3 years compared to an average 90 days. You can even order your re-manufactured transmission with performance upgrades, such as heavy duty clutches, performance planetary gear sets and heavy duty input and output shafts.
